This picture moved me so much today. I’m incredibly grateful for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom. Thank you, military families!

40 Years of Family + 10 Netflix title suggestions! #StreamTeam

Netflix Logo Update 2014

This July my parents celebrate 40 years of marriage. I am so excited for them- and for our whole family!

IMG_9217

I have been incredibly blessed to have parents who instilled in me a love for my family. Growing up, my parents spent time teaching my siblings and I how to get along, reminding us that, “When you’re older, we want you to be each other’s best friends, so let’s get along now!”

My parents worked hard to create special family memories for us, including trips to Disneyland in California, cabin vacations at our favorite spot in northern Wisconsin, camping and fishing trips, singing with my dad playing the guitar around the campfire in our backyard, and so much more.

My parents also thoughtfully created family traditions like Friday night movie night, Saturday morning cinnamon rolls, family devotions, the Christmas morning line-up, going to the 4th of July parade, and yes- the long, outdoor work day every Labor Day. 🙂

As a parent with three little boys of my own, I now realize that a TON of planning, effort, time and money was required of my parents to pull off all of these memories and traditions! I am incredibly grateful. And I also find myself working hard to create the same gifts of memories and traditions for my sons.

Movies are a fun part of the memories my family and I share. Correct and timely usage of a, “well-placed quote” is always a cause for a good laugh. My parents occasionally called an, “all movie quote” family dinner. The only conversation allowed was movie quotes. Oh…the hilarity and uproarious laughter that ensued!!

Another tradition learned from my mom- beautiful table decorations and place cards for everyone on special occasions!

Netflix Logo Update 2014

I not sure why, but I have not watched anything on the reality TV section of Netflix for years. Since we don’t have cable, my husband and I had completely missed my (now) favorite TV show of all time- Love it or List it! Do you know it? We are currently HOOKED on the show and getting all kinds of ideas for our sweet home that is lovely but still needs some updating.

Oh. My. Goodness. I love this show! Hilary’s design ideas are out of this world! I’m pretty sure that I drool over her kitchens. And David’s house finds are none too shabby…

You might enjoy seeing some of our own home projects on this thread: Decorating on a Dime.

Love it or List it

Another favorite we recently discovered is Flip or Flop. Spouses Tarek and Christina enter the high-stakes world of “house flipping”: buying and renovating homes, then selling them for, hopefully, a profit. This one intrigues us because we are interested in getting a little more involved in real estate (than the one rental we currently have) in the coming years.  Neat show.

Flip or Flop

The next series I am headed to is Flea Market Flip. My mom adores the show and it’s right up my alley. I LOVE the concept of repurosing and restoring/painting old furniture. I’ve done just a teeny bit of it myself, but would love to do more…if…I…ever…have…the…time.

Flea Market Flip

So….the reality TV section on Netflix has now become my favorite! I love that I can relax while also getting awesome ideas for my home. Can’t wait to continue to explore more shows!

Friday Night Movie Reviews & Suggestions! #Netflix #StreamTeam

Netflix Logo Update 2014

Looking for the perfect family movie? Friday night is upon us, and I’ve got some great suggestions for you today!

Mr Peabody and Sherman

My son (seven) and I watched Mr. Peabody and Sherman the other day, and he absolutely LOVED it! The idea of a dog adopting a boy and taking him on educational time travel adventures caught my eye. High adventure mixed with humor and education make for an awesome story! This is the perfect Friday movie night flick. A little scary for my four-year old, but he will get there. 🙂

Houseboat

In the mood for a classic the other night, my hubby and I watched Houseboat. Cary Grant and Sophia Loren star in this fun, clean romantic classic about an unlikely couple. As a parent of three boys, I loved the angle of Grant’s three children. The youngest boy with his feelings, thoughts and emotions reminded us throughout the film of one of our own little boys. So cute!

Rosemary and Thyme

We have exhausted every episode of Foyle’s War, Midsomer Murder, and even Murder, She Wrote, we decided to give Rosemary & Thyme a try last night. Two episodes later we had to head to bed, but we’re going to keep watching! Love the English characters and scenery, plus the horticultural twist is fresh and different for a murder mystery series!

Quartet

Looking for a flick with our favorite, Maggie Smith, we came across this cute movie: Quartet. Being the musicians that we are, we enjoyed it. 🙂 Love opera? Check it out!

It’s birthday season in our house! We have had THREE birthdays within TWELVE days! Today is my youngest’s two-year-old birthday. He’s been running around the house yellowing, “TWO!” all day yesterday and today. I love it!!

Birthday Joel2

My oldest just turned seven, and I can hardly believe it. One of my favorite things to ask him is what he wants to be when he grows up. Naturally, the list has changed drastically over the past year. He wants to be everything from a pastor to a race car driver and a police officer! I love it.

My $20 Mantle/Bookshelf Update

I love Christmas decorations, and I really dis-like taking them down in January. The house always looks a little sad and bare when the decs come down. I decided to use the occasion to spruce up my den a little! I have these wonderful built-in bookshelves on either side of our fireplace, and I have been using them to store…well, books. Very plain and boring, but functional! After a little over a year in our “new” home, I decided to tackle the bookshelves. My mantle needed help, too.

This is what the mantle and bookshelves looked like after the Christmas decs came down:

Bookshelves before

I headed to Pinterest and searched both, “mantle styling” and “bookshelf styling.” Lots of ideas there! I didn’t spend a penny, just took books down, moved things in from other rooms, arranged, and re-arranged. I put the DVDs and CDs on the bottom shelves in baskets that weren’t being used well in another room.

This was my first attempt, using only what I had in my house:

Bookshelves first try

I thought this was a HUGE improvement, but the look was much darker than I wanted. We have LOTS of books, and for the most part, their covers are very dark. I knew I wanted more white on the shelves, and Linda over at Mulberry House agreed that the shelves looked a bit cluttered.

While I was at Mulberry House, I picked up a set of rooster book ends ($12) and a white pitcher ($8). I especially l.o.v.e the roster book ends!!!  Here they are…

Roosters

So, I took down more books, added my white Mulberry House finds, and moved in a few more white pieces from around the house. My goal is to eventually add white shutters to either side of the mirror on the mantle and re-arrange it a bit more. I also need to move the mirror up the wall a little. Here’s how the mantle looks for now…

And here are the bookshelves…

Final bookshelves

So, there you have my $20 mantle/bookshelf update! I’m loving it!!

Four-Legged Stars to Stream on Netflix #StreamTeam

Charlie 2014

Our family recently adopted an amazing dog from a couple who was moving out of town and couldn’t take her to their new situation. Charlie (short for Charlene) entered our family in August of 2014 with absolutely no drama and quickly moved right into the hearts of our three little boys- especially our one-year-old who calls her “Cha!!” “Cha” puts up with lots of lovin’ from little ones, does her job of watching over the boys while they play outside beautifully, is an awesome traveler, a great snuggler, and an all-around awesome family dog!

Here’s a picture of Charlie with her greatest admirer:

Veggies Tales Christmas
Merry Christmas!!

December is already flying by… I can hardly believe it is only a week until Christmas!

My husband and I are church musicians, and we have had a very FULL month of beautiful music, with more coming this weekend and Christmas Eve. A few of our favorite events have been having our children’s choirs sing at the Governor of Alabama’s Mansion – such a festive event! Our ensembles also sang in a little chapel in Old Alabama Town earlier in the month. This Sunday night we have a 33-piece orchestra accompanying our choir for our 19th annual Lessons and Carols Service at Trinity. It’s going to be spectacular!

Well, between church, school, friends, and family, we have been super busy the past few weeks, but not too busy to watch a few of our favorite Christmas movies on Netflix. There are so many! Here are just a few of our favorites:
